J. Chris Newburg's refreshing smart and edgy humor, delivered with a streetwise sense of philosophical cool, has propelled the guitarist/songwriter-cum-comedian to the forefront of the comedy scene.
Just five month's after Newburg's debut, a Detroit Free Press story on metro Detroit comedy cited him as one of the five local comics most likely to break out into the national spotlight.
A few month's later, readers of Real Detroit magazine voted him "Best Local Comedian." Riding this wave as Detroit's hottest stand-up talent, Newburg has indeed stepped into the national stage, appearing on Comedy Central's "Premium Blend" TV show, and the nationally syndicated radio program, "The Bob and Tom Show." He's opening for the likes of Carrot Top, Drew Carey. Weird Al Yankovich, Lewis Black and Dave Coulier, and floored audiences at such high venues as The Improv , in L.A., and Luna Lounge and the Gotham Comedy Club in New York. Newburg will take it to a new level this fall when he is featured on Comedy Central's web-based show, " Spotlight. "
A uniquely inventive presence on the standup circuit, Newberg deftly combines hilarious and off beat observations on life with original acoustic guitar melodies. Picture Bob Dylan and his six string with Dennis Miller's incisive, cerebral wit, and you begin to glimpse the unique, comedy talent that is J. Chris Newburg.
Described as hip, authentic and wildly creative, Newburg is no stranger to entertaining crowds- he's the founder, guitarist, main song-writer and lyricist for the renowned Detroit rock band, The Vudu Hippies. In fact, it was with the Vudu Hippies that Newburg unwittingly began honing his comedy skills. Whenever one of the band's shows was delayed- a broken guitar string, for instance, or a sound problem- Newburg would crack up the audience with funny acoustical songs that he made up on the spot. Crowd reaction to these improvisational guitar-based interludes led Newburg to enroll at the nationally renowned Second City Comedy Troupe, where he studied for two years. He further flexed his comedy chops with the metro Detroit improvisational troupe Motor City Improv. Now, the rest of the country is discovering what those in the Midwest have known for years: J. Chris Newburg is one of the most original talents to burst upon the stand-up comedy scene in years.
